When you launch your online ordering site, you must decide how to bill the possibility for customers to add or remove ingredients with customizable products.

There are two ways to proceed when a customer adds or removes an ingredient:

  • either the customer pays the ingredient added in full,
  • or the customer pays only the difference between the ingredient added and the ingredient removed.

Here, LivePepper explains the two options available so that you may make an informed choice.

Customization rule no. 1: the ingredient added is billed in full

If you opt for rule no. 1 when configuring your online ordering site, this is how your customers are billed:

  • The removal of the ingredient(s) is free of charge, but does not grant a price reduction.
  • The supplement (i.e. the added ingredient(s)) is billed at its normal price. For example, to add a pineapple topping at a price of €1.50, the total price increases by €1.50, i.e. the exact price of the ingredient.

Customization rule no. 2: the price of the ingredient removed is taken into account

If you opt for rule no. 2 when configuring your online ordering site, this is how your customers are billed:

  • The removal of the ingredient(s) is free of charge.
  • The supplement (i.e. the added ingredient(s)) is billed at its normal price, minus any ingredients that may have been removed. For example, if the customer removes the mushrooms topping, priced €1.20, and adds the artichokes topping, priced €1.50, the total price increases by €0.30 (€1.50 – €1.20 = €0.30).

This second option is more advantageous to the customer: the exact price of the product actually ordered is applied.
